The technique

What microblading is

I create fine strokes that read as individual hairs, following the direction your own brow grows. The result is fuller, more defined brows that still look like yours. It is the most natural of the three techniques.

If you’re used to seeing your brows filled in with powder or pencil, this probably isn’t the one for you. Microblading reads softer than makeup.

Is it right for you?

Who it is for, and who it is not

Who it's for

  • Gaps or sparse patches you want filled in
  • Brows that are thin, very light or short on definition
  • Dry or normal skin. Some combination skin works, depending on how oily your forehead runs
  • You don’t fill your brows in every day

Who it isn't for

  • Oily skin
  • You want a makeup or powder finish
  • You’re covering previous work that healed dark. Powder brows are usually the answer in those cases
Medical and timing details

I also can’t work on you if you are pregnant or nursing, have uncontrolled diabetes, a clotting disorder or take blood thinners, are in chemotherapy or immunocompromised, have dermatitis in the area, or are allergic to nickel or to anesthetic. If you use isotretinoin, we wait six months after your last dose.

Timing matters for a few common treatments: no chemical peel or facial laser within 4 to 8 weeks either side, no Botox within 4 weeks either side, no hyaluronic filler near the brows within 4 weeks either side, and stop retinol, retinoids and exfoliating acids at least 2 weeks before.

Before and after

Prep and aftercare

Before your appointment

Following these makes the difference between pigment that stays and pigment that fades unevenly.

  • No alcohol for 24 to 48 hours before
  • No coffee, energy drinks or extra caffeine the day of
  • No aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen or other blood thinners, unless your doctor prescribed them. Never stop prescribed medication without medical approval
  • Stop retinol, Retin-A and exfoliating acids around the brows 1 to 2 weeks before
  • Tell me before booking if you have had recent Botox or filler in your forehead or brow area
Healing, day by day

This is not a tattoo, and how you care for it over ten days decides how it looks for the next year. Be strict with this.

  • Day 1. After we finish, clean the area front to back with an alcohol-free wipe, then apply a thin layer of the vitamin cream, pressing it into the skin. Repeat every 2 hours.
  • Days 2 to 10. Clean your brows and apply the vitamin cream 3 times a day, in a thin layer.
  • Throughout. No makeup and no oils on the area. Stay out of direct sun. No pools, steam rooms or exercise for a week. Do not pick the flakes; let them fall on their own.

I will message you at one week to see how it is going.

FAQ

Questions I get asked every week

Does it hurt?

We use numbing cream, and most clients tell me afterward that it was nothing like what they expected. If you’re especially sensitive to pain you may find it uncomfortable at moments, but it isn’t unbearable.

Will it look natural, or will people be able to tell?

This is the fear I hear most, and it’s a fair one. It comes down to two things: the design and the color. I measure the shape to your face instead of applying one template to everyone, and I mix your pigment for your undertone.

Will my brows turn red or gray over time?

That’s what happens when an artist uses a premixed brown without knowing what’s inside it. Different skin holds the components of that mix differently, and as it fades the wrong undertone surfaces. I build every color from primary pigments, for your skin specifically. That is the single biggest reason my work fades warm and soft instead of changing into a color you never chose.

Why do you cost more than the place down the street?

There are a lot of people working without a license out of their homes around here. I don’t judge them, I started out too, and that’s usually where you are when you’re learning. What I can tell you is that a real part of my work is fixing permanent makeup done somewhere cheaper. Removal is expensive and slow. The price difference buys you a licensed, insured artist, pigments and needles I chose on quality rather than cost, a design built for your face, and someone who actually listens to what you want before touching your skin.

What if I’m not sure what I want?

Book a consultation. It’s free, there’s no obligation, and I’ll show you what each technique would look like on you and answer everything. Plenty of people come in for that and book weeks later. Consultations are normally in the studio. If you’re coming from further out (Elizabeth, Fort Lee, North Bergen, West New York) we can do it by video instead.
