The technique
What lip neutralization is
Naturally dark or unevenly pigmented lips don’t take color the way lighter lips do. Put a pretty shade straight on top and it shifts to something you didn’t ask for.
So we do it in the right order. First I neutralize the underlying tone until your lips read even and natural. Then, once the base is right, we build the color you came for.
How many sessions that takes depends on how your lips respond. Darker lips usually need two or three. I’ll tell you what I expect at your consultation, before you pay for anything.
Is it right for you?
Who it is for, and who it is not
Who it's for
- Naturally dark lips, or lips with high melanin concentration
- Lips that read brown, purple, blue or gray
- Uneven pigmentation, where parts of the lip are darker than others
- Darker borders or darker inner areas
Who it isn't for
- Naturally light lips. If that’s you, you want lip blush, not this
- Active cold sores, cuts or lesions, or very dry lips
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
Medical and timing details
I also can’t work on active cold sores, cuts or lesions, very dry or cracked lips, or dermatitis and eczema on the lip area. If you’ve had hyaluronic filler or Botox, we wait at least 6 weeks. If you’ve had filler dissolved with hyaluronidase, we wait 6 weeks and I’ll need medical clearance if there were complications. Not during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
If you get cold sores, tell me before you book. Lip micropigmentation can trigger an outbreak, and your doctor may want to put you on antiviral prophylaxis beforehand.

Before and after
Prep and aftercare
The week before and the day of
- Keep your lips well moisturized every day
- No aggressive lip exfoliation
- No recent filler or Botox until the waiting period is up
- Tell me if you have a history of cold sores
The day of: clean lips, no makeup. No cuts, deep cracks, scabs or irritation. No active cold sore. No unusual swelling or sensitivity. Come well hydrated and skip alcohol beforehand.
Healing
Lips need more attention than brows. The first ten days are the whole result.
- Keep them moisturized. Use the medicated balm every time your lips start to feel dry, roughly every 30 minutes at first.
- Clean them 3 times a day with an alcohol-free wipe or cotton with filtered water.
- Do not touch, scratch or pull. Flaking skin comes off on its own. If you need to touch your lips, wash your hands first. Only the aftercare product I give you, in a thin layer.
- First 24 hours: no alcohol. For 7 to 10 days: no lip makeup, no kissing while the lip is sensitive or open, no spicy, acidic or very hot food if it stings, no exfoliation, no acids or retinoids, no pools, hot tubs, saunas or steam rooms, no intense sweating, no direct sun, and no other cosmetic procedures on your lips until they have fully recovered.

FAQ
Questions I get asked every week
Does it hurt?
We use numbing cream, and most clients tell me afterward that it was nothing like what they expected. If you’re especially sensitive to pain you may find it uncomfortable at moments, but it isn’t unbearable.
Will it look natural, or will people be able to tell?
This is the fear I hear most, and it’s a fair one. It comes down to two things: the design and the color. I measure the shape to your face instead of applying one template to everyone, and I mix your pigment for your undertone.
How long does it last?
Lip neutralization lasts 2 to 4 years and lip blush 4 to 5 years. Your aftercare during the first ten days affects this more than anything else.
Why do you cost more than the place down the street?
There are a lot of people working without a license out of their homes around here. I don’t judge them, I started out too, and that’s usually where you are when you’re learning. What I can tell you is that a real part of my work is fixing permanent makeup done somewhere cheaper. Removal is expensive and slow. The price difference buys you a licensed, insured artist, pigments and needles I chose on quality rather than cost, a design built for your face, and someone who actually listens to what you want before touching your skin.
What if I’m not sure what I want?
Book a consultation. It’s free, there’s no obligation, and I’ll show you what each technique would look like on you and answer everything. Plenty of people come in for that and book weeks later. Consultations are normally in the studio. If you’re coming from further out (Elizabeth, Fort Lee, North Bergen, West New York) we can do it by video instead.
